It was 100 degrees in the shade in Arizona on a June morning in 1981 when he decided to drive out to Houston, Texas to visit his eldest daughter. He was now retired and his wife had passed away five years earlier. Nothing to keep him from leaving and he would take his youngest daughter with him for company. It took them a couple of days to get there by car and when they arrived on the second evening he took ill.
His two daughters and son-in-law sat up all evening catching up on family news. It was about midnight when they all felt a strong urge to pray for him. As they sought the direction of the Lord for their father and after praying for the Lord to heal him, one of them moving under the unction of the Holy Spirit, prayed for the Lord to bring a wife into his life soon.
The next morning after breakfast they were all on the patio when the phone rang. The mysterious woman’s voice wanted to know if Desmond Wood was there? He was summoned to the phone and visited with her for over an hour. As it turned out, she had been his first love when they were 18 and 19. She had been setting alone in her apartment in Fullerton, California that morning and her thoughts turned to the old days. She too was widowed and she decided to try and track him down. She knew nothing about his circumstances; she was just wondering how his life turned out.
They visited every evening on the phone after he returned home. They watched baseball games together while they visited. He was due to attend a convention in Washington and invited her to accompany him. She had never flown before and was hesitant to accept but she desperately wanted to see him. She agreed to fly to Phoenix and meet him at the airport then they would catch a later flight on to Washington.
Many years had passed since they had seen each other so she agreed to be wearing a light pink suite and he would be wearing a pink carnation in the lapel of his suit. But he didn’t need to know what she was wearing for when she stepped through the door of that plane he knew immediately who she was. She was as beautiful as he had remembered. They found a quiet little corner in the dinning room to visit while they waited for the later flight. As they sat there across from each other, he reached out and took her hand and it felt as though they had never skipped a beat in their relationship from childhood. He knew then that he was going to ask her to marry him.
He proposed to her on their first evening after the reception. She accepted and they began to make plans to marry. Maxine McClure married her childhood sweetheart Desmond Wood in November of 1981in California.
